This is a 1/14th scale Ferrari 166 MM Barchetta "Lusso". It was only offered in kit form for a short period in 1996 when Marshal Buck at Creative Miniature Associates ran out of prebuilt orders. I doubt more than 20 where made available as kits.

MG Models got ahold of one of these and tried to copy it but their kit is much simpler and I hear they are pretty horrible in the detail department.

I had one of those from Marshall Buck. He sold me one of the Lemans winning 1949 kits, one of only 3 kits sold! I didnt like the oddball scale but it is a very nice kit. The MG is not a copy and is poorly done.
My rarest kit is maybe the ScaleKraft Maserati 450S that someone has copied in the USA now(M.B.). I also have the Alfa Canguro and Guilietta Sprint along with a SZ Tronica from Joker. Big kits I would say the Minidelta P3 and Ultimate P4 and Dino 206S kits in 1/12th scale.

I've got a couple of 1/8 Pochers - the 993 (OK, so not that rare) and the Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 Monza 1931.

Also have a 1/12 Tamiya Texaco Ma****ro McLaren M23, though it is a white box reissue and not the original.

Nice resin. Got any pictures? By the way, I did assume the Barchetta had been copied because what are the odds two different limited production model makers would develop and release the same odd-ball car in 1/14th scale!:eek7:

Go to www.minidelta.be (http://www.minidelta.be) for photos of the Ferrari P3 in 1/12th. That site should keep you busy if you have not seen it before. I think www.hapico.com (http://www.hapico.com)
and www.islandcollectibles.net (http://www.islandcollectibles.net) have photos of the Ultimate Dino 206 in 1/12th and maybe a photo of one or two ScaleKraft kits.

MG Models and ABC Brianza were were famous about 25 years ago for making Ferrari models in 1/14 scale and quite a few were made. Apparently, it was not a odd-ball scale back then.

I've got quite a few rare kits, the ones that are really hard to find right now are several Q-Model Ferraris, Climax GTOs, Little Garage 512BB Belancauto, and Scale Kraft Ferraris.

Rare kits that I own, but don't come across very often on auction are...

* Otaki Lamborghini Cheetah

And these two that I recently managed to get.

The top one is the Celica XX 2600G, which is known as the first generation Supra. The bottom one appears to be DB5, but the scaled-down wheelbase matches the DB4GT...?! (Also, the model is 24 times bigger than the real car!)

Hi guys,

Personally i don't there is a rare kit, because eventually they will pop up. In my opinion there is no rare kit. It's just term to lift up the price. I've seen this many times. Let's say the Tamiya M23 before the rerelease. Those kits where going from 100€ to 150€ a kit. I bouhgt mine for 45€(shipping included). After the rerelease the prices from the old dropped, because they where no longer rare. That's why i din't have a rare kit in mu stash, because everything can be found.

Best regards,

Dissagree, of course some of the models whitch are realease again, are not rare anymore, but still, there is lots of kits, whitch are no longer produced, probably never realeased and they are rare, becouse they can't be find anywhere. Agree , that there is many advertised of kits whitch are marked as "RARE" when they are not, but thats different story.

I agree with both of you. But to me a rare kit is one that isn't produced anymore. If you cant get the kit right away and have to search for it then you have a rare kit. I can go into a hobby store and buy a tamiya supra, or aoishima 350z. However i cannot go into a store or online, and buy a fujimi konieg bi turbo, or aoshima r32 and those are rare kits. I think most of these kits shown in this thread are considered rare.

koksik

11-22-2012, 09:33 AM

Thats what I mean, if there is kit whitch is not preduced anymore, not available in any shops, even on ebay, we can call that this is a rare kit.

that's pretty rare (not my photo but I do have one in my stash somewhere)

Even rarer is the "Bond" convertible version of the 2000GT or the DB6 from the same series.
You don't see the old 1970s Revell kits of the Lancia Stratos, Maserati Bora and Ferrari 308GTB and 365Boxer come up for sale anymore either. Even the more common Magnum version of the 308 seems to have stopped turning up on the Bay.

Something that can make a kit rare is when the tooling gets modified to represent the following year model such as the case with old annual kits.

Here are a couple I just listed, I beleive the tooling for these went on to become '64 models, making it a very costly exercise to modify them back to '63's, therefore unlikely to happen making any earlier releases, dare I say it.... Rare.

This is what happened to lots of old '60s kits, bit of a shame but thats the way it was done back then.

Hi there,

I'm following this threath now for a while, and there seems to be some questions about a "rare kit" these days because manufacturers keep reissuing there old kits.

I'm a collector from ESCI car kits, so are they rare?
ESCI doesn't exist anymore but there are a few kits reissued by Revell and Italeri. To me these are rare kits, but for someone with no interest they are just kits.

At the moment I'm not searching anymore for ESCI kits, I have to much of them and as I look on the net prises are rising.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I sometimes wonder how many they are worth, as I think I have all different kits they fabricated, inclusive the "S" kits and specials like the "Ford transit 84", all unbuilt.

So are they rare?

drunken monkey

12-03-2012, 05:50 PM

Rare does not = valuable.
Rare 1/24 ESCI kits of European cars don't have much market value because most of them are rather poorly made, even if it is a desirable subject matter. What's more is that people seem less inclined to pay for low quality kits that they have to do extensive work to fix.

If no one wants to buy it, it's worth nothing.

I don't know about 'rare' but I have a nice pile of the earlier Tamiya 1/12 F1 kit as well as the 1/8 Revell Stingray and E-Type.
I've also got a pile of early Monogram, Ertl, AMC American stuff.
In all, around 70-ish kits - enough to keep me busy for a good few years.
I have to say though I very rarely buy a kit twice, except to make the odd one-off variant.
I've been a keen car modeller all my life (I'm 58) but I've NEVER had a stash containing half a dozen of 'this kit' and another eigh of 'such a kit' etc.....
Please someone explain - What's the point????
I would get bored rigid building the same kit over and over again.
I can understand building kits of the same car but different manufacturers as they can vary a lot in detail, features and content - but a pile of identical kits?????
YAWN....... (Sorry)

Some really nice looking stuff hidden away in your stashes though.

In real life i own a mkIV VW GTI. So i had to build a replica. I'm such a fan i plan on building a few in 2door versions as well as 20th annversary. So my plan was to get a few kits to actually build (eventually). Plus sometimes you score on getting the same kit if it becomes discontinued and rare. Might have some extra dollars in there in the future if i don't build them all. For me its a love for VW and BMW and thats why collect multiple kits.

sky1911

12-25-2012, 07:05 AM

well i only have 4 kits, 2 of which have been built almost 20 years ago and the other 2 are sitting next to me, mocking me, waiting to be built. of those 4 kits only 1 is what i would consider rare. it's the

1/8 Rosso Ferrari 643 WRX

as to is it rare? i don't know. i mean, yes it is possibly rare because it was only built for a very limited amount of time and at some point into the run, the factory burned down and that was the end of the company and the model as such. just how rare it is, i don't know. i have no idea how many kits were actually built back then. any insight into this is appreciated

and just for argument's sake, the other 3 kits i mentioned are:
1/8 Pocher Ferrari F40 (somewhat less expensive than the 643 but different quality level - bad fit and all)

to be built:
1/12 Tamiya Lola T70 MK3 first re-issue, i believe (BS-12015)
1/12 Ferrari 312T (BS-12034)

these i want to build with lots of customizing, some time ago starting drawing plans for the ferrari chassis to be rebuilt from aluminium sheets, etc. all out :D...

I have to say (shoot me down in flames...) that as much as I love Jaguar and Aston Martin, and I've built at most 2 of various kits, I can't imagine anything more BORING than building the same kit umpteen times over.....
To me, kit building is the challenge of doing something new, not just making another car in red instead of blue!
PLEASE enlighten me into the black arts of doing the same thing ten times over....... At the end of the day, even though the finished article might look a bit different, in terms of building the whole kit, most of it is the same thing......
Tedious and repetetive, or what??????
It strikes me as not so much kit building, as a bit of 'O.C.D'.... (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

Personally I build motorsports subjects and whilst I may have built several that started with the same base kit, no two are the same because they get corrected (intakes, roll cages, completely different interior) for specific races or complete livery changes depending on what point in time I am trying to capture.

Now, if your argument is about building Ferrari 360 and all you're varying is the paint color - then I am 100% with you.

I bought my "Holy Grail" kit yesterday for a fair price. It's the MFH Toleman TG184 Monaco GP. This is a pretty rare kit and getting hard to find.

Best regards,
Lesley
